Temporary driving bans are an important supporting measure for protecting the population and the environment from the constant noise and air pollution caused by road freight traffic. In Switzerland, lorries are banned every night between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. (night ban) and from Saturday 10 p.m. to Monday 5 a.m. (Sunday ban). EU transport policy has repeatedly been exerting pressure on countries with strict driving bans.
The Alpine Initiative is a Swiss asscociation. In 1989 the association launched the popular initiative "for the protection of the Alpine region from transit traffic", that was accepted on the 20th February 1994 by a majority of both the Swiss population and the cantons.
